Caregivers & Planning for the Future

Are you an adult child of an elderly parent? Have you thought about hiring one or more caregivers? Then we have a message for you. We invite you to sit down and have a talk with your family, and soon.

As life expectancy goes up, people are living well into their 80s and 90s. Many of them are actively seeking good caregivers, but they don’t know where to look. Of course, with aging comes a whole slew of potential health problems. So what can you do to support your parents?

You can start by having an open conversation. If you haven’t already, then it may be time to have a talk with Mom and Dad. Ask them directly:

  • Where do you want to live?
  • What kind of lifestyle do you want 10 or 15 years from now?
  • If we had caregivers coming over, what could they do for you?
  • What resources do we have to support you and your lifestyle?

talk with your parents about caregivers

Your family might consider certain subjects off-limits for conversation. That’s understandable — start with an easier topic, like their most recent doctor’s visit, and then expand from there. If words like “caregivers” are too scary, try saying “companion,” instead, or “someone to check in and look after you.”

You may feel nervous talking money or mortality. Your folks might respond in ways you don’t want to hear. Or you might be pleasantly surprised by what they say. That’s why it’s so important to approach this conversation with an open mind.

Obviously most people would prefer to live independently, to stay in their own home instead of moving to a facility. If that’s the case for your parents, then you should consider hiring a companion to assist with activities of daily living.

Fun fact: scientists have found that the #1 way to prevent dementia is through frequent social interaction. For many seniors, their caregiver is their primary source for conversation. Hiring a caregiver is a great way to ensure that your loved one has someone to talk with, preventing loneliness, depression, and staving off the worst effects of dementia.

At Complete Caregiver, we encourage our clients to get out of the house, go on outings, and be as active as their health will allow.

Watch this space! Over the next several months, we’ll be posting lots of helpful tips and information. We’ll show you how you can talk with your family about preparing for the future, and how to support your aging parents with excellent companion care.

I call you my olympic caregiver team. You did it all…superbly. Somehow, I got to the hospital on time, was prepared for surgery, slept through the procedure, put back into my clothes and whisked back home as if it was just another ordinary day. My son was kept informed, and for me all went smoothly.  Actually, you were beyond superb. You have given me extraordinary care. And you have become treasured friends. You are in my heart.
